Although art never took centre stage throughout highschool and college, Brent continued to draw in his spare time. While attending Sir Sandford Fleming College for an environmental science program in Lindsay, Ontario, Canada, Brent entered and won several art contests offered at the college. After graduating and starting a full time career in the environmental field, Brent entered amateur art contests at the Wye Marsh Wildlife Art Festival in Midland, Ontario. He won first place and best in show for his ink drawings. This experience provided Brent with the confidence to enter the show as an exhibitor the following year. In 1997, Brent submitted an ink drawing to Ducks Unlimited and the drawing, Red Fox, was selected as Ducks Unlimited, Ontario Sponsorship Print. In 1998 Brent was invited to participate in a watercolour course offered by a fellow artist. Although Brent had no experience with painting and the use of colour, the weekend course was instrumental in launching Brent into watercolour painting. Watercolour painting was a natural fit and now Brent works almost exclusively in watercolours. Brent has shown his work at a number of shows and galleries that include,
In 2006 Brent was selected as a memeber of the Canadian Society of Painters in Water Colours (CSPWC). Artist's Statement Watercolours allow me to show the subtleties of colour and texture in nature and the homes and buildings weathered by age and exposure to the elements. The subjects I choose include waterscapes, landscapes and homesteads that bend, twist and sometimes break under the stress of mother nature and time. I choose subjects that I like, usually water, clouds and rock. My favourite painting combines all three but not necessarily in that order of importance. I have travelled to all of the locations that I paint. In my paintings I want the viewer to experience the feeling and emotions I have experienced while I was at that location. I want the viewer to feel the rock and touch the water. I try to make my paintings as real as possible and this is a constant challenge to me. I want to push the limits of watercolours. My paintings are balanced and clean with no unnecessary details or distractions. I want to evoke emotion in the viewer. To me, the most satisfying compliment is when someone tells me my painting stirs a memory of a camping trip, a family outing or of a homestead they once lived. |
